The Outlaw Noble Salt by Amy Harmon

The Outlaw Noble Salt

After hearing so much buzz about this book, I finally dove in and listened to the Audible version. I wasn’t entirely sure what I was getting into, but the glowing reviews convinced me to give it a try—and I’m glad I did.

This is a historical retelling of Butch Cassidy, with the author taking creative liberties to imagine an alternate ending to his story. While the main plot is fictional, it’s fascinating how seamlessly accurate historical details are woven into the narrative.

The book is rich with love, heartbreak, and unexpected turns. I especially enjoyed learning more about the “Wild Bunch” and the legendary tales surrounding Butch Cassidy, often called the “Robin Hood” of the Wild West for stealing from the wealthy to give to the poor. Amy Harmon captures the tension in her main character—a man torn between his desire to live honorably and the shadows of a checkered past. She has a gift for making readers feel sympathy for even the most scandalous characters.

The love interest is equally compelling, a complex soul wrestling with what it truly means to love and be loved. Together, their story pulls you in, offering the kind of escape only a beautifully written historical romance can deliver.

While history records Butch Cassidy’s life ending in South America, conflicting reports have fueled speculation for years. In this fictional version, I found myself loving Amy Harmon’s imagined twist.

I’d definitely recommend this book—just keep in mind it contains some language and mature themes, so it’s best for adult readers. It would be great for your next book club read.
